What is F-Droid?

F-Droid is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device.

I use F-Droid myself, and whenever I can choose between Google Play Store and F-Droid, I opt to get my app from F-Droid. It’s also a great option if you have a device without the Google Play Store, or are planning to switch over to a non-Google environment.

As you might know, Google banned Ad blockers from the Google Play Store. F-Droid has no such restrictions and you can find free, open-source and trusted Ad blockers for both rooted and non-rooted devices on F-Droid, like AdAway and Blokada.

There is even an alternative Google Play Store available on F-Droid – called Yalp Store – which is worth a look. You can use it to download the freely available apps from the Google Play Store without having Google (or a Google account) on your Android device.
